Below is more information on the band's director of music.
Director of Music - Alan Bourne
Alan accepted the post of Voluntary Band Instructor for RAF St Athan in 1986 - he had a choice of bands to work with - RAF St Athan and RAF Halton. He chose St Athan because he would be allowed to live in the mess and, to this day, he insists he only found out afterwards that St Athan Band were the Champion Voluntary Band of the Royal Air Force! Alan now lives in St Athan village with his wife, Claire (Cornet) and his son.
Alan thrives on the high profile work that the band undertakes and his best moment was when the band accompanied Bryn Terfel in front of a capcity crowd at the Millennium Stadium for the Wales verses England match and readily admits that he already has his dream job. Alan enjoys the competitive aspect of brass banding and seeing the youngsters in the beginner and youth groups improve and develop. He is famous for his cheesy jokes and introductions so much so that at Christmas time he doesn't need to tell the band what the next piece is, they can guess by his stories! His silliest moment was probably breaking his glasses the night before the Eisteddfod in 2009 and having to conduct the band in a bit of a blur the next day!
Alan loves pub entertainment and is often found presenting pub quizzes, karaoke and race nights. For more than 10 years, Alan has sat as a Justice of the Peace in the Vale of Glamorgan.
